Republican Senator Calls for Hegseth’s Firing, as Chris Murphy Warns Democracy May Not Survive Until 2028
In a video interview, Sen. Tom Tillis reportedly labeled the Defense Secretary “incompetent,” while Sen. Chris Murphy argued that America’s spiritual crisis predates Trump — and that the 2028 election might not be free or fair.

A newly surfaced video commentary and interview has captured sharp Republican criticism of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, alongside a warning from Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy that the United States may not hold a free and fair presidential election in 2028.
According to the video host, Sen. Tom Tillis (R-NC), who is not seeking reelection, has called for Hegseth’s removal. In an interview with Politico magazine cited in the video, Tillis reportedly said he would “love to see Pete Hegseth fired because he’s incompetent and doing a horrible job,” adding that the firing was on his “Christmas wish list.” The video host noted that Tillis voted to confirm Hegseth but changed his position after deciding to retire. [Unverified: The video’s characterization of Tillis’s motives is the host’s interpretation.]
The host alleged that Republicans do not object to Hegseth on moral grounds — such as “violation of international law” or “killing of innocence” — but because his “screw-ups” could cost the Republican Party its Senate majority. The video also claimed that President Donald Trump recently called Hegseth to “yell at him” for canceling a troop deployment to Poland, a claim that could not be independently verified.
The majority of the video features an interview with Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), who discussed his new book, “Crisis of the Common Good.” Murphy argued that Trump is “a symptom” of deeper cultural and economic breakdowns, not the cause. He cited the takeover of youth sports by private equity firms as an example, saying his son’s hockey league is owned by a private equity-backed company that charges grandparents $37.50 to subscribe to live streams. Murphy has introduced a bill to ban private equity ownership of youth sports leagues.
“Our culture, our economy has been broken for a long time,” Murphy said. “We have these cults of profit, of consumption, of technology that are driving people wild.”
Murphy also endorsed mandatory national service for young people, calling for six months of community service to rebuild connection and purpose. He criticized what he called the “cult of credentialism” — the overemphasis on college degrees — and proposed making some form of post-high school education free for all Americans.
Regarding Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who has voted with Republicans on some nominees, Murphy argued that Democrats need to be a “big tent party” and accept senators who agree 90% of the time. “If we send a signal that there’s just no room with us if you don’t vote with us 100% of the time, we’re just going to continue to lose election after election,” Murphy said.
Asked about a potential presidential run in 2028, Murphy demurred. “There may not be a free and fair election in 2028,” he said. “I think I’d be an idiot if I spent any real time on my own personal political future right now. I should be spending all of my time trying to keep the democracy alive.”
Murphy added that Democrats must prioritize a constitutional amendment to get “billionaire and corporate money out of politics” to convince young people that the system is not permanently rigged.
The video host concluded that while a few Republicans like Tillis are speaking out, most Republican elected officials are “absolute true believer cult members in the cult of Trump.”
